Scientific Illustrations

In this lesson, students read from their book in a section called the "Skill Handbook" which covers a variety of scientific skills that are needed for our year's work in Life Science.

In reading from pages 779-780 (Interpreting Scientific Illustrations) they discovered such concepts as:
  • Anterior
  • Posterior
  • Ventral
  • Dorsal
  • Bilateral Symmetry
  • Radial Symmetry
  • Asymmetrical

After reading this section they were asked to create their own scientific illustration of an object that shows a longitudinal and cross section view. All parts of their diagrams were to be labeled as well. These illustrations will become part of their portfolios and a selected few will be published on the class web site.

We seem to have chosen a theme of fruit for this exercise. A pear was used as an example in our book so many students followed this lead. Take a look at some the submitted illustrations:
